A New Way to Wear Your White Shirt

A New Way to Wear Your White Shirt

There's no question about it; every woman has to have a classic white button-down shirt (a.k.a. one of the most versatile and timeless pieces of clothing you could own). They're simple, chic, and can easily be dressed up or down. If you don't have one, what are you waiting for? There are countless ways to wear them, and here's one you probably haven't tried before: wearing it under a sheath. We love how it instantly transforms the look of your little black (or gray, or purple, or red...) dress and makes the whole outfit totally work-appropriate (it's perfect for fall). Here's how to nail the dress-over-shirt look:

  1. Start with the right shirt. Make sure it has a full front button placket, long sleeves, and a fitted shape. Then find a sleeveless sheath or (simple) shift dress to wear over it. Accentuate your waist with a skinny belt if the dress doesn't already have a defined waistline.
  2. Layer on a voluminous cape to contrast the fitted shirt and dress combo. This adds a bit of elegant flair to the ensemble.
  3. Slip on a pair of bold-colored booties (extra style points for suede, which is a huge trend this fall). We chose a simple red one -- we love how it looks with the navy and gray. Finish everything off with a neutral satchel. Notice how the metal hardware on the bag and belt match the buttons on the cape.
  4. Just for fun, you can pin a couple of flower brooches onto the dress or cape to bring out the color of the shoes. You can also add a chic cap or bucket hat for an equestrian look. Feel free to wear warm, textured tights when the temperature drops.

  1. Beautiful outfit! Love the touches of red. I always thought capes were a bit odd, but this one is gorgeous!
